​California State Seal of Biliteracy

Information for Parents & Students
The California Department of Education California State Seal of Biliteracy (SSB) is an award placed on a student’s high school diploma and transcript that recognizes students who have demonstrated proficiency in English and at least one other language.
The Seal shows colleges, universities, employers, and scholarship programs that a student is bilingual and biliterate.

Why Is the Seal of Biliteracy Valuable?
Students who earn the Seal demonstrate important real-world skills, including:
  • Bilingual communication
  • Reading and writing in two languages
  • Cultural awareness
  • College and career readiness
The Seal can strengthen:
  • College applications
  • Scholarship opportunities
  • Job applications
  • Future careers in education, healthcare, business, law enforcement, and more
